My Aunt Nell remembers travelling on the train from Penshurst (her home town) to Melbourne especially to buy a violin when she was around 10. Last week she had her 89th birthday so the trip would have been in 1933.

She came with her mother who had been given a recommendation from the music teacher to visit a instrument shop in Elizabeth Street.  Nell recalls the shop being owned by a Mr Samson or Sampson.

A quick internet search revealed a H.S. Sampson had a shop at 115 Elizabeth Street. I found this via Trove, an H.S. Sampson had an advertisment in "The Argus" on 6 November 1915. 

When I peer through the F hole of my violin I can see beautiful copperplate writing.
